Through group sessions, participants will develop skills to help them process their grief, receive support from other youths who can relate to the struggles of loss and achieve the following objective:
- Learn about the physical and behavioral impact grief provokes.
- Recognize various cultural beliefs utilized to process grief.
- Work through the phases of grief with individual and group activities.
- Learn meaning reconstruction techniques such as narrative reconstruction, remembrance practices, understanding funeral and burial practices, sharing stories, and learning that a sense of peace about the deceased can exist after death and to find meaning in the wake of bereavement.
- Strengthen intrapersonal skills that impact the grieving process.
- Utilize support to process potential changes to identity, roles, and other relationships.
- Learn about different bereavement community resources available.
Eligibility for Participation
Eligible youth would have experienced the loss of a significant relationship: parent, sibling, close relative, or friend within the last year and a half and experience challenges processing their grief. These challenges may be: denial of the reality of the death; avoidance of emotions that may be associated with grief, such as sadness; significant behavioral changes; avoidance of reminders of the deceased, or other behaviors that are out of the norm for the youth.
Group Schedule and Frequency
This group takes place at our clinic in Burlington over an 8-10 week period. The program has eight sessions, which participants are expected to attend weekly. If there are holidays or other interferences participants will be given as much notice as possible and make up dates will be shared. The group will be closed to new enrollment once it begins. Groups will begin in either late December or early January, and will continue to be offered as long as there is a need.
Fees
There is only a $20.00 initial supply fee. Each participant will create a memory box that they will bring home upon completion.
